From my time studying cardiomyocytes, sarcomeres have a Z-line where the Z is from the German word “zwischen” which means between. For completion’s sake, The H-line and M-line are “heller” (brighter) and “mittel” (middle) respectively. German is found mostly in chemistry and physics, but it found its way into biology here and there.
There is zDNA, which is a specific conformation of DNA.
Another favorite is zwitterionic based on the German “zwitter” for hermaphrodite. These are salts with both a negative and positive charge (hence the name hermaphrodite) and are useful for working with proteins. However, I don’t think there is an acronym/abbreviation associated with zwitterions.
Of course, none of these are probably going to be used in any discussion threads.
Now my OCD is making me look for an entry for each letter of the alphabet. I blame it on @Mervin_Bitikofer. ![]()
JEDP: each letter represents a documentary source for the Torah, part of the Documentary Hypothesis
- From Stephen Wolfe’s “The Case for Christian Nationalism”:
- GAE - Global American Empire

Do we go by context or also writing convention?
I’ve been using MSWV for “modern scientific worldview”.
(Though my brain just read what I wrote and thought “mono-Syllabic word variance”.)
Does quantum theory come up enough for MWI (many worlds interpretation) to qualify?
Hello! I joined last night and this is my first comment. I love this verse. Today of all days. “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” -Colossians 4:6
“SpeedyJesus” as my desire to stop wasting time and start creating good fruits for God’s glory and mankind’s benefit.
I come in peace. May take me awhile to navigate the system here. I may lurk and learn at first and definitely try to honor the site protocol.
Glossary a good place for me to start.
Take care all. Nice to meet you. Thank You Lord.
- Your last name wouldn’t happen to be Gonzalez, would it?
- Briefly, there are two kinds of threads: public threads, such as the one that we’re exchanging posts in now; and private threads, such as the one I am going to post after I finish this message.
WEIRD
= Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic
Nice addition! And unfortunately here in the U.S. we may have to shorten it to “W” soon … or a few of the billionaires here might still be “WR”.
Compared to many places in the world, and to our past here, say 275 years ago these are still all true. Contrast with, say current Afghanistan or PNG.
Yeah - very true. May it stay so despite the work of current power-hoarders to make us more like Afghanistan. “WE” or “WED” are still nice acronyms to hold on to as well. But you’re right - I’m obviously just making commentary here. Shame on me for dour early morning thoughts!
Welcome to the forum, @SpeedyJesus, (you can use the @ and name that often is brought up to notify someone you are posting in relation to what they said to notify them if you wish). We look forward to learning more about you and hearing your voice. Don’t worry if there is a little contention at times, as we try to remain in community despite some of our differences. And if it does get unwholesome or ungracious, do not hesitate to “flag” a post and let the moderators here deal with it. Sometimes a lot happens out of the public eye in that regard, and we would rather deal with it instead of having posters fight it out. Or, we send them to their room to deal with it in a private message.
But, ideally, we are a happy family and safe space to voice questions and offer opinions that perhaps are difficult to discuss elsewhere. We avoid partisan politics, with the caveat that these days, everything is politics. Sigh.
Blessings,

It would appear that
FCOL - For crying out loud
is not recognised by all, sorry.
Richard
LIB, thank you
LIB: Lying in bed
LLM: Large language model
Okay - LLM, yep! goin in. But LIB? @Randy might have to share more context for that one. I thought it was just him being humorous with the ‘Arkansas’ version of “Well, I’ll Be!”
