Glossary of common abbreviations and acronyms for these here parts

And something must have changed about our Discourse platform software, because now whenever I insert a new line into the glossary of the OP, it insists on adding in a full empty line (like a vertical paragraph break). Will have to figure out how to keep the list neater now again.

That makes more sense in context. lol… I didn’t know what it was so lying in bed is what came up searching online.

Hmmm… maybe you need to split off a new list for common Arkansas abbreviations.

My sister lived in Alabama for a while. She always got a kick out of “Oh, bless her/his heart”, and it usually didn’t have a positive connotation. The stronger the southern accent, the better.

LOL sorry, yes, just meant “Well, I’ll be!” “FCOL” isn’t something I knew, either!

Like Brian Wilson!

Ah, I see I was really replying to Ethan’s:

Drove downtown in the rain
Nine thirty on a Tuesday night
Just to check out the late night
Record shop
Call it impulsive
Call it compulsive
Call it insane
But when I′m surrounded I just can’t stop
It′s a matter of instinct
It’s a matter of conditioning
Matter of fact
You can call me Pavlov, dog
:musical_note:
Ring a bell and I’ll salivate
And how′d you like that?
Dr.Landy tell me
You′re not just a pedagogue
:musical_note:
Cause right now I’m
Lyin′ in bed, just like Brian Wilson did
Well I’m
I′m lyin’ in bed just like Brian Wilson did ohh
:musical_note:
So I′m lyin’ here
Just starin’ at the ceilin′ tiles
And I′m thinkin’ about
What to think about
Just listenin′ and relistenin’
To smiley smile
And I′m wonderin’ if this is
Some kind of creative drought because
:musical_note:
I′m lyin’ in bed
Just like Brian Wilson did
Well I’m
I′m lyin′ in bed just like Brian Wilson did ohh
:musical_note:
And if you wanna find me I’ll be
Out in the sandbox
Just wonderin′ where the hell all the
Love is gone
I’m playin′ my guitar and buildin’
Castles in the sun, woh wo woh
And singin′, “Fun, fun, fun”
:musical_note:
I’m lyin’ in bed
Just like Brian Wilson did
Well I′m
I′m lyin’ in bed just like Brian Wilson did ohh
:musical_note:
I had a dream
That I was three hundred pounds
And though I was very heavy
I floated ′til I couldn’t see the ground
I floated ′til I couldn’t see the ground, ohh
Somebody help me
I couldn′t see the ground
Somebody help me
Couldn’t see the ground

I get sent too the last post not the first. Is that right?

Richard

Yeah, if you’re referring to what happens whenever you return to a thread you’ve visited (and already read all its most recent posts before) you are automatically scrolled to the end, (or to the end of wherever you read to last) which is what you would usually want to do. So it is a feature, not a bug. To quickly get back up to the OP of any long thread, you can just find the little vertical scroll bar off to the right (maybe not even very visible until you hover over it with the mouse) and move the little ‘elevator’ up to the top. That gets you there more quickly than scrolling through it all (like in our monster humor thread!). It’s easier to do on an actual computer than on a small phone screen. [in fact, I don’t even see any scroll bar at all on my phone I’m typing this on, so it probably only works on PCs.]

I have a tiny scroll bar on my iPhone, but it is tiny and only pops up if you scroll up a bit

Maybe you could add a “Top of page” function?
On this thread it would be an asset, but also , sometimes , it helps to remember what the OP started with, especially with long meandering responses.

Richard

Now that you mention it, I do see it on mine too - once I start scrolling up as you said. But I would need a “needle finger” to actually use it. So on my (Android) phone, it’s useless, and I’m left just scrolling up the slower way.

In the bottom right corner, there’s a blue box with the post count (currently “73 / 73” here). If you tap on that, it will bring up a topic summary with a scroll bar you can use to quickly scroll to the beginning of the thread. There’s also a “Jump to” button to quickly go to a specific post.

Cool! - and thanks, Marshall! yeah - and that makes my scroll bar accessible so I can just move it to the top! Everybody else probably already knows this, but you just helped me get up to speed on a useful thing.

Learned something new today

Saw this used and had to look it up:
SSDD- same (stuff), different day. Could be used a lot to describe some of the posts here…

I can’t recall when I first encountered SSDD but do know that it stuck in my head when I read it in Stephen King’s book, “Dreamcatcher”.

Useful in many situations. Another one:

BOHICA: Bend over, here it comes again. Pronounced bow-hee-cuh.

I learned that from an MD who said that was a warning interns blurted to others when a senior resident was making the rounds.

Medical training has produced a lot of colorful and politically incorrect acronyms, many of which are NSFW. There is a fine line between being objective and being dehumanized when dealing with illness and death on a daily basis.

Or fear of being reamed out by a manager.

I learned that from a navy 2nd lieutenant concerning a master sergeant asking for a private word.
