What about it? Lots of noncoding DNA is certainly functional, and the more complex the organism, the more functional noncoding DNA there’s likely to be. What here suggests that the entire noncoding genome is functional?

(Also, note that greater complexity is correlated with larger body size and smaller populations, both of which are likely to mean less effective selection for efficient DNA replication. So a correlation between complexity and noncoding DNA could easily arise without any difference in the amount of functional noncoding DNA.)

Well, no, this study can’t mean that most of the supposed junk isn’t junk, because that conclusion does not follow from their results. Their results are consistent with most of the supposed junk being functional, but their results are also consistent with most of the junk spelling out a translation of the Kama Sutra into Old Norse. Lots of things could be true – the idea is to find evidence for one of these possibilities.
