Just wondering what has been already produced. Would you send me the links? Thanks
What do you mean by apologetics? It’s mostly a term used that seems to imply that science supports the literalist claims of the Bible. Like arguments that science supports a global flood or a flat earth.
So it depends first on what you mean.
Good question. Apologetics has sort of a tenuous relationship with BioLogos it seems. Most traditional apologetics seems to be arguing how Biblical belief is intellectually a valid position despite conflicts with science, whereas most here of the Christian variety seem to be assuming first that Christianity is true, and that science can be reconciled with it as being truth as well. You may be interested in the thread discussing apologetics linked here:
The homepage would probably be the best place to start. There are pull down menus at the top of the page that might contain what you are looking for.
In my experience, BioLogos doesn’t wade into the larger apologetics pool with the likes of Craig or Sobel. BioLogos exists in a smaller (but important) corner that is trying to show Christians that consensus science and Christianity can be reconciled with one another.
Actually that’s not all that traditional; for most of church history apologetics has aimed to show that belief in Christ is not irrational or unreasonable, often within the prevailing worldview of society.
I wouldn’t be happy with any of the explanations of “apologetics” so far given in replies. In fact, some of them are way off the mark. I am happier to go with Alister McGrath’s explanation of the word. I quote:
“The term “apologetics” makes a lot more sense when we consider the meaning of the Greek word on which it based - apologia. An apologia is a “defense,” a reasoned case proving the innocence of the accused person in court, or a demonstration of the correctness of an argument.”
McGrath traces this to 1 Peter 3:15, where Peter exhorts Christians to give a reasonable answer for the hope they have; and to do so with gentleness and respect. For all you Greek scholars, here is the Greek text of 1 Peter 3:15 with the word apologia bolded:
κύριον δὲ τὸν Χριστὸν ἁγιάσατε ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν, ἕτοιμοι ἀεὶ πρὸς ἀπολογίαν παντὶ τῷ αἰτοῦντι ὑμᾶς λόγον περὶ τῆς ἐν ὑμῖν ἐλπίδος, (1Pe 3:15 BNT)
Having quoted McGrath, I would also recommend the book from which the quote is drawn:
Alister E. McGrath. Mere Apologetics. How to Help Seekers and Sceptics Find Faith. 2012. Baker Books. The quote is drawn from page 15 of the paperback edition.
I think there is a wide divide between what apologetics should be and apologetics as practiced on the internet. Much of what I have seen is just “preaching to the choir”.
Or church history for that matter… Acts 2:14-36 is an incredible apologetic argument btw
The main mission of BioLogos has been to help the church embrace science, not argue scientific minded people into believing in God. So the “apologetic” is geared toward defending the reliability of science, not proving the existence of God.
