The Personality and Career of Satan

The Personality and Career of Satan (1962) by Henry A. Murray

  • Seem familiar?

Greetings, @Terry_Sampson . Can you give us a synopsis?
I am having a hard time reading it on my laptop, for some reason.
Thank you

He sounds like a disturbed and unhappy person.
Thanks.

Having read the first two pages, I’m not sure it’s worth the effort. A synopsis would definitely be nice!

I’m not sure how related the subject is, but on a whim I started listening to O’Reilly’s Killing the Witches… oh wow! I wasn’t prepared for the vivid account of Salem Massachusetts in 1692 where a 4yo’s testimony was enough to hang the mother. Brilliant writing that begins with the story of the Mayflower. As the witch trials were winding down, and more than half the book to go, I wondered what was next. From Cotton Mather, the story turms to a biographical sketch of Benjamin Franklin and his religious sentiments. The Constitution is signed in 1787 and there’s still about 1/3 of the book to go.

Can you guess what happened in 1949 that O’Reilly gives to the remaining book?

I loved the book and this quote at the end was fantastic,

“In this nation the absolute right to believe or not believe was established… something witchhunters and demons of all types cannot be happy about”

I haven’t seen (or listened to) that, but I remember a book that switched back and forth between the witch trials (including the one with that 4y.o.) and modern sex abuse cases. The parallels were frightening; the author concluded that up to 1/3 of all accusations of sexual abuse from kids under age 16 were invented, but since the same atmosphere as drive the witch trials was present in the sex-abuse atmosphere of the time nearly all of those accused were convicted anyway.

I imagine that Satan is laughing his head off about the two.

God has a remarkable way of turning Satan’s laughter back on him… “in supreme contempt he mocks them”
