Although the article sometimes says “ocean”, when they get it right, it is suggesting that the ultra low velocity zone may have been produced from ocean floor rocks sinking down into the mantle at trenches. The actual research does not say that Earth’s core may be encased by a huge ocean; that’s bad proofreading on the part of the popular article.
