I can concur with paramecium being ‘animate’, but the only difference really is the biological ‘technology’. It is not beyond the realm of imagination that a functioning synthetic facsimile could could be engineered using molecular manipulation.

And since they would be indistinguishable from each other, how would one be alive and the other not? (Ooh – we created life in the lab.)
