I will certainly not deny that the PCUSA has a large number of faithful members and clergy, or that the PCA (and probably more prevalently the CREC, though I know less about it) have members and clergy who can be visibly inconsistent about application of biblical principals. My intended point was solely that the PCA and CREC appear to do a better job of actually enforcing their stated doctrinal standards (whatever one thinks of those standards), versus the PCUSA, and its application to the question “How strict are different Presbyterian denominations about views of Creation and the application of the Westminster Standards?”.
I am really confused by the Chicago Statement, sometimes, too. Here’s a discussion we had about it a few years ago. I’m interested in what you and others think on it.
Five Views On Biblical Inerrancy: A Review - Faith & Science Conversation - The BioLogos Forum
To be honest, somewhat to my grief, but also my relief, I suspect I have a bit of a lower view on inerrancy, compared to some; but I think that some of the trust I had was misdirected.
Thanks.
addendum–the link to the review is now defunct. Here’s one from Gospel Coalition.
I dealt with a couple who wanted to do that; they’d been baptized as infants and had decided they wanted to make their own decision. I asked, bluntly, “Do you think God did it wrong?” and explained that Baptism isn’t something a person does, for God or for themselves or for others, it’s something God does to the person. From there it wasn’t hard to steer them to a “re-affirmation” re-enactment of baptism, kind of like when people hold a re-enactment ceremony of their marriage vows.
I would support the assertion that the Bible is inerrant in what it affirms, but I am not too fond of the wording of the Chicago statement.
Both a “high” view and a “low” view of Scripture often involve a high view of one’s own authority.
Well, and here’s to an hopefully ever higher viewing of the one to whom we are all being pointed towards by those scriptures!
Merry Christmas everyone! ![]()
