Does anyone have any good resources on how genders evolved? Going from asexual reproduction to sexual reproduction seems like a large leap.
Dennis mentioned some links on this thread: How did sexual reproduction originate and evolve?
Generally speaking, @AdCaelumEo, any accident of genetic exchange that helped make a population more genetically diverse helped it more quickly adapt to new environments, food sources, etc.
While other populations, who had developed a more precise and reliable way of replicating genetic material tended to run on the slow lane of adaptation. And in the game of survival that is played for millions of years, sometimes the slow lane was the unavoidable road of inevitable extinction.
