Evolution is not a scientific theory but ID is?

That is certainly not orthodox christianity.
The central belief is that Jesus is really a bodily human man, really died a physical death, and really physically resurrected. And the physical is real, has substance, is not an illusion on the Enterprise holodeck.

What do you define as ā€œrealā€?

True. I am not a Christian.

The use I made of the word ā€œrealā€ was specific to the context of creation ā€“ so the relevant question here is what do I define as a real creation.

A dream is not a real creation. In general a dream is not even logically coherent. So to create something real, the first thing you have to achieve is logical coherence. Then you have work out the details of how the thing is supposed to workā€¦ something else which dreams lack. So back to the carpenter example, you have to define what a table is supposed to do and then satisfy the requirements for it to accomplish the task. Obviously the ability to stand rather than collapse to the ground under some limit of weight is one of the defining characteristics of a table. If the carpenter has to hold it together then it should not be called a table at all.

Then you donā€™t trust all of what Jesus said, either.

I am curious, @Ani99ā€“what faith do you adhere to, if any? Thanks.

So much certainty regarding what directives the Bible carries from God. My atheist friends who sometimes tick me off with their vehement anti-theism call Christianity a death cult. I think it is theology like yours which has informed their opinion. I know better than to think any one Christian speaks for all of you.

Good. Thatā€™s what I was thinking but I never studied it out in detail on the mutation side as much as studying it from a clinical nutrition side that emphasized the impacts of diet and lifestyle on the immune system which affected how well it was at killing faulty cells from mutating.

To me it seemed to have nothing to do with mutations concerning evolution. But at the same time a mutation is a cell developing wrong. Just seems like the mutation that resulted in blue eyes is completely different from a mutation resulting in brain tumors. But how cancer and evolution overlap concerning mutations is interesting and maybe in a few years Iā€™ll be able to move it from the far back burner to the front. Iā€™m over run at the moment trying to work out the geographical layers of south Alabama and potential topography from 10-100k years ago, and working that with extinct flora mapping all to better understand the giant American ground Sloth to help narrow down where to go fossil hunting for them at.

Last count I am Muslim, Shia to be precise.

I say last count because my parents first tried to force Greek Orthodoxy but I didnā€™t accept it as I have strong recollections of my most previous birth in India where I was a devout Hindu.
I joined an ashram in my teens and then later joined Buddhist groups. So I have been a meditator for around 30 years.
Then I met some Iranians, who introduced me to Sufism. So I became a Sufi first before considering Islam and what it was about.

I trust Jesus absolutely, but that is to say the words of Jesus and not the interpretations of others. I believe that Jesus is a prophet same as Mohammad.
Jesus said ā€œI am my Father (meaning God) are oneā€ and I understand that to mean that Jesus is deeply enlightened and thus in Union with God. I donā€™t believe that he was saying he was God or part of God or the son of God in the sense that Christian are using it. In Jewish religion, which Jesus never rejected, all are sons and daughters of God.

Creation is often referred to as a dream by various people but this idea is based on our own experience. We reach out and touch something and see it as independent and physical and are moved to call it real if has those credentials. However there is nothing ā€œoutsideā€ of The Mind of God and the spiritual realm. The creation, which God created and everything in it, are real from the point of view that they exist. However they are not independently existent and canā€™t be. I donā€™t think we can refer this to a carpenter and a table.

It could all be a metaphor, or unnderstood in some other way, or just plain false, but the NT makes a claim that on the surface looks like what I said. Donā€™t hate me for reading the Bible!

Hey, if you donā€™t hate me for not reading the Bible how can I hate you for reading it wrong?

How do you interpret 2 Peter 3:10?

The day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.

I donā€™t know. I find some Bible passages thought provoking but with this one I donā€™t really know what to think. So I went to Pete Ennsā€™ website and searched it for that scripture.

Frankly I donā€™t understand why an old post heā€™d written called ā€œWhy itā€™s good to doubt Godā€ came up. I couldnā€™t find any reference to your scripture in it so who knows? But I found myself agreeing with him that certainty is the enemy. Are you certain that the passage you quoted means that the earth we know is to be flushed down the tubes?

By no means. I just donā€™t know of any alternate interpretations :man_shrugging: what am I to do?

Put it in the ā€œreal posersā€ file.

I looked into the HOX genes. These are regulatory genes. And yes, if we go and change /create a mutation in a hox gene we see some weird transformation in the organism such as legs growing out of the head of a fruit fly. However this is not convincing evidence of evolution.
If we only saw that a gene was simply translated into a protein then maybe we could be convinced that a mutation can make a difference but this is a long, long way from what actually happens.

Regulatory genes give rise to regulatory proteins or transcription factors. For a protein to arise there needs to be

  1. transcription of the gene,
  2. post transcriptional modifications, i.e., a cut & paste job is done to form final form of the mRNA.
  3. the mRNA formed has to be taken out of the nucleus and into the cytoplasm and into a ribosome. There it is translated from a string of nucleotides to a string of amino acids.
  4. There are post translational modifications, even more involved than the post transcriptional modifications.
  5. It is then taken to the Golgi apparatus and folded, given a zip code and switched on there or at its final location were it is to do a job.
  6. These are produced by stromal cells that support an organ or tissue so they need to be exported and imported by the relevant cells.
  7. They need to be taken to the nucleus of those cells where cell division is taking place for a limb to develop
  8. They roll along the DNA much like a bolt rolls over a screw thread until they find the right location and there they produce some effect that influences how the relevant gene is copied and for how long etc.,etc.
  9. This is why one protein coding gene can give rise to several different proteins.

The sophistication of the ā€œmachineryā€ involved in embryonic and adult development and maintenance far,ā€¦ FARā€¦ exceeds anything that the humankind have ever developed in machines we have made. There is no way that any of this comes into being by random changes in the geneome followed by natural selection because there has to be a working, functional protein for it to be useful and hence passed on to the next generation AND that change has to occur in gametes.
Dr. Behe tried to point to this with the example of the flagellum but he did not explain what was involved. His example is lame when taken simply at face value. A host of proteins are involved working in unison for a flagellum to be built. Only when people appreciate what is involved can they begin to realize that evolution simply as random mutations and natural selection is a pipe dream of people like Dawkins who wants to be intellectually fulfilled as an atheist.

Sorry that I donā€™t have time for a full post @EricMH and @MarkD. Just to that 2 Peter 3:10has also be understood as discussing a purification rather than a total annihilation. In this view the earth is renewed and restored rather than binned and remade. This would be my view too.

As a general rule, the bibleā€™s apocalyptic stuff usually has its meaning in the symbolic and non-literal. Even events that we know will happen (eg. Jesusā€™ return) may not actually take place exactly ā€˜as writtenā€™ (cf. Stars falling from the sky; heaven being rolled back like a scroll, etc.).

Not everything on your list happens to every protein, but those things happen to make different type of proteins with different functions

These two statements are not correct

  • Transcription factors do not go into the ER/Golgi. Those organelles are for processing secreted or membrane bound proteins

  • Not sure what you are referring to with the word ā€œtheseā€. Transcription factors are not secreted proteins, but there are lots of different signaling molecules that are secreted that send different types of signals to different tissues throughout the body
