why should we believe someone writing in say 600BC would not literally believe Adam lived to almost a thousand years?

How about because one of the authors of material at the same time period has Abraham and Sarah laughing at the idea of having a kid at a century of age. This indicates that they darned well knew people didn’t live for centuries.

Maybe they thought men could live for centuries but women couldn’t? Or at least couldn’t stay fertile for centuries?

Thanks for sharing that as I have never seen the ages broken down like that. It makes a lot of sense. As for Joseph, his association with Egypt was a two edged sword, as his actions ultimately put his family in slavery when he was no longer around to advocate for them.
