Hi guys,
my wife and I went to the movies last nite to watch the latest David Attenborough documentary Ocean.
Can i just say, parts of this film were so confronting i genuinely struggled to hold back tears…what fishing trawlers are doing to our ocean habitats is absolutely devastating.
The images and sounds coming from cameras mounted on those nets being dragged along the bottom of the sea floor and the absolute carnage being caused in real time is very confronting to watch.
I urge those who can to go and watch that documentary, its an eye-opener both in terms of the devastation caused by fishing trawlers AND the simplicity of the proposed solution.
David Attenborough has offered a wonderful chance at salvation that is also very very simple…if we create wildlife parks in about 1/3 of our ocean regions near the coastal areas, we can reverse the trend within just a handful of years and the fish stocks etc are capable of rebounding very rapidly. We have real life evidences where this has already occurred…the science is 100% certain it will work.
One observation that i will make is that given the increase in world population, i wonder if its possible to assign at least 1/3 of our oceans to wildlife sanctuaries?
I know that a very large percentage of fishing trailer catch is thrown overboard, however, if we take out 1/3 of the fisheries that are close to continents for example, would improving efficiency in commercial fishing be enough to offset the loss of fishery areas to wildlife sanctuaries? ( because as it is, we cant seem to catch enough usable fish to support the population growth)
The ocean can’t grow any bigger and nature has its own formula for determining fish stocks based on this finite ocean size if you like. Its us humans who are setting artificial demands on the natural order that determines fish stocks and, this is what seems to me to be causing all this trouble in the first place!
