Charity for the Holiday Season

What do you give for the holiday season? We enjoy sometimes throwing a twist in for those who already have all the stuff they need, by giving a goat through World Vision! https://donate.worldvision.org/giftcatalog

Others: https://biologos.org/give

Givedirectly.org is a secular donation program that gives cash to the poorest of the poor with terrific results (based on excellent studies).

PAACS (Pan African Association of Christian Surgeons) https://www.paacs.net/ or galmi.org

What charities do you like to support at this season? Homeless shelters?

Thanks.

Great ideas. I admit I struggle with selfishness and fortunately have a generous wife who keeps me on track a bit. We also help out a couple of single moms and a single lady with chronic illness both financially and with time ( and by we, mostly my wife with the time) but feel that the anonymous giving through organizations is good for all as well.

That’s great! Your giving reminds me of my father in law, whose rule is to give to his neighbors “without letting the left hand know what the right hand is doing.” He does that both here and in Africa, where he works in Togo.

Matthew 6:1-2 1"Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2"So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.

I really like Kiva.org. As far as I know it’s secular, but it’s a way to contribute toward microloans for people all over the world – students, farmers, small-business owners. You give $25 toward a loan along with a bunch of other people, and if the amount is met, the loan is funded. Once your $25 is paid back, you can go on the site and help someone new. It’s been such a neat experience to see what kinds of projects and needs people have, and to get to choose who my money goes to.

For Christian organizations, I like World Relief and Compassion.
