What I mean by objective morality, is the morality that is true for all people at all times whether an individual believes it or now. Subjective morality is what an individual believes is moral, and is only objective morality if it is true. Truth is truth, whether one believes it or not.
Since Jesus is the way the truth and the life, then the morality he teaches is objective, whether you believe in Jesus or not.
And yes, if one believes this objective morality, then this is also his subjective morality. Subjective morality can be objective morality it the subjective morality is true.
The Koran has some elements of objective morality such as the belief that all are equal before God, as this is an element of loving another as yourself. But other parts are not true. All religions have some elements of objective morality, but are not complete truth.
Finally, objective morality requires us to respect and love others even if their moral beliefs are in error. So please do not interpret my comments as judging others, as indeed it is ok to question their beliefs without judging them as individuals. Judgement is left up to God as no one knows anotherâs heart except Him.
How do we determine if morality is true? From what I can see, we do so subjectively. When we try to determine if morality is true we reference the subjective wants and needs of humans.
(On topic, sort of⌠):
I agree, that we search for objective morality and for truth subjectively. We can look at the needs of other humans to form this subjective view, but it is possibly the needs of our own self as an individual that is the best laboratory for this discovery, because our own self is something we know better than anything else in the universe. Thus we are aware of the moral code we possess and can wonder where it came from?
Interesting article. As a matter of personal morality I donât approve of transplants in general, which only means that I will decline to have such a transplant myself as a matter of principle. I simply donât like the way it makes human beings into a commodity. To elaborate on the personal morality aspect, this is my way of being like a vegetarian. I eat meat but I will not have an organ transplant. But I make no judgement of anyone who chooses otherwise â as I hope is the case with all the other types of vegetarians out there.
If morality is objective then you could demonstrate that something is morally good without reference to the wants and needs of humans and instead base it on demonstrable facts. I have yet to see anyone do that.
I took a quick look at your link, and especially the 5th and 6th reasons against objective morality.
The 5th reason argues against God being the source, and even suggests that who says that Godâs morality is better than Satanâs. Really? The second point made is that if there was a supra-good God and this objective morality existed, we wouldnât need God. Really? Personal selfishness is at the root of all evil desires, and Satan, and our selfish desire is to do what we want to do. Even with Godâs help to teach us this objective morality, too few follow it.
Arguing against the 6th point - I want to clarify what I mean when I say that each of us searches for objective morality âsubjectivelyâ. I am suggesting that we find it within ourselves personally based on the objective moral code planted in us by God that tells us what we âoughtâ to do. So while it is subjective, it is not based on âhumanâ opinions at all, but indeed it is taught by God and specifically Jesus Christ. If you donât believe in Jesus as God, or God at all, than objective morality would be non-existent and irrelevant. Morality would be all about oneâs self and personal beliefs, and if one had the power, it would be used to influence the moral opinion on the world. Adolf Hitler, Karl Marx, Joseph Stalin are examples of subjective morality without God, while Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Martin Luther King Jr are examples of subjective morality based on Godâs objective morality. Without God, there is no objective morality, and any subjective morality would be rooted in selfishness and erroneous in its application to humanity.
Yes, really. Isnât it us who decide that Godâs morality is better than Satanâs?
Yes, really. We would just use the objective morality and wouldnât need God to tell us what it is.
Selfishness leads to ignoring what other human beings want and need. We are talking about the wants and needs of humanity as a whole.
That is a subjective belief.
âI believe today that my conduct is in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator.â
- Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf , Vol. 1 Chapter 2
Adolf Hitler claimed he was following that objective morality. Would that mean you think his actions were objectively moral?
Hey! I saw your post about the historicity of the Old Testament. do you treat the old testament as legends? I also ask myself this question: if the Old Testament is a fairy tale, does it harm Christianity? how do you deal with it?
Well if you check the answers people gave at the thread it seems that a lot of things did actually happened. For example Exodus.People often use a wrong date though .You can aslo check my thread exclusively made for Exodus if you have time. Also the book of Kings its historical as well.Tribes mentioned in the OT also seemed to have existed, with even now new details come to ligh the most recent beign the hitites if im correct.Of course the language it uses along with the hyperbole might exaggerate some things but what can you doâŚMythical?Well there are a lot of poems and non literalistic style in the pages of it but i wouldnt say mythical.I hope that helps
thank you for the answer.yes it helps me. I thought about these questions for a long time, itâs good that Iâm not alone
Should one give water to a man dying of thirst? Should one change a babyâs nappy?
We need to love others just as much as we love our sinful self warts and all. That means giving water to a man dying of thirst and changing a baby nappy if needed. Someone may ask does that mean you donât kill the enemy in a war. Tough call, but if in a battle with fellow soldiers killing is required from each other. So it is not so much the act of killing but the reason behind it. This is why objective morality cannot be based on human rules about deeds or actions. It is based on the motive behind them.
