I buried my pet tortoise today (it died), and we gave it a Quasi-Christian funeral, complete with a cross at his grave. Is this acceptable for christians?

Sorry for your loss. You are definitely not the first person to do so. We had a whole pet (and random wild bird and baby bunny) graveyard by the railroad tracks while I was growing up. Crosses were involved and prayers were said at the funerals.
Sorry for your loss. I see no problem with that. George Macdonald, my favorite author, argued for a relationship between God and animals; but even if that were not so, doesn’t God have an interest in creation?
