Reassuring Grandma: Christian kids entering university

2Timothy 2
14 Keep reminding God’s people of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen. 15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.
23 Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels…

Maybe verses both sides of the argument can reflect on.

Thats what mankind thought at the time of Noahs flood. Note what Christ Himself stated regarding this…

37As it was in the days of Noah, so will it be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark. 39And they were oblivious, until the flood came and swept them all away. So will it be at the coming of the Son of Man.

If you think that God will save you simply because he is just and a loving God wont kill “nice people”, then you are grossly mistaken. What we call nice people are not the same as what God calls “saints”!

There is a very specific rule about salvation and its found in Revelation 14:9-12

“If anyone worships the beast and its image, and receives its mark on his forehead or on his hand, 10he too will drink the wine of God’s anger, poured undiluted into the cup of His wrath. And he will be tormented in fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. 11And the smoke of their torment rises forever and ever. Day and night there is no rest for those who worship the beast and its image, or for anyone who receives the mark of its name.”

12Here is a call for the perseverance of the saints who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.

Now i believe that there will be atheists in heaven. I do not really have a sound theological support for this idea, however, the reason i believe this is because there are some people in this world who dedicate their lives to others. They may not subscribe to God, however, they do subscribe to the statement Christ made “in as much as you do it to the least of these my brethren, you do it to me” Matt 25:40

Unfortuntaly for the people here, the above does not apply to those who know better and yet refuse the whisperings of the Holy Spirit. The apostle Peter gave us a very definate answer to this one:

Acts5: 3Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and withhold some of the proceeds from the land? 4Did it not belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? How could you conceive such a deed in your heart? You have not lied to men, but to God!”

9“How could you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord?” Peter replied. “Look, the feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.”

10At that instant she fell down at his feet and died.

I agree!

God bless you.

Given my earlier comment, I hope that discussion as a student, and dialoging with others of different perspective, would not be cast as lying. That is a long way from publicly promoting yourself as an authoratative and trustworthy expert, and then advocating falsehoods. I think @jammycakes’ laid out the difference well, in terms of qualification and presentation.

Yours truly here was pretty obnoxious in high school, actively seeking out anyone who needed to be argued out of evolutionary brainwashing. Based off material from ICR, I used a speech assignment in English class to attack evolution. My postings here are penance.

Haha! I join you!
And @jammycakes , thank you for your note. We need that.

Ha. :slightly_smiling_face: They don’t seem obligatory or recalcitrant – you hide it well.

I would like to expand on this a little bit…I believe that God has a real sense of humor…probably a lot more humourous than we give Him credit for. I believe that because of this, He is going to get a real kick out of the looks on saved atheists’ faces when they find themselves “at the pearly gates”.

I think God will get a kick out of giving people a pleasant surprise.

A very wise response and I agree. JPM, that is a very good point and i thank you for it. Certainly, both sides can take that reference to heart.

I’m not certain I believe that you are really that obtuse. The scriptures don’t start off the various sections with a specific declaration of what literary type is being used, or what language. The writers and their audiences knew what the type was because they were familiar with them.

YEC approaches the scriptures as thought they are a sort of encyclopedia written a generation ago in English and thus imposes a modern worldview on them. But a modern worldview doesn’t fit what was written millennia ago in a different language with a worldview that is essentially alien to us using forms of literature that aren’t like anything we have. To anyone interested in actually studying the scriptures, these things should be obvious.

So I will ask:

Do you know what language the Genesis Creation account was written in?
Can you identify the literary type(s) that account makes use of?
Can you give the cultural background of that account?
Can you describe the ‘cosmology’ the account employs?

If you can’t do those, then you aren’t capable of interpreting the Genesis Creation account because you aren’t actually reading it, you’re reading your own opinions into it.

As for the biblical text, I’ve already informed you and others more than once that Hebrew scholars long ago interpreting the text said that Creation began as something smaller than a grain of mustard (i.e. a particle of ground-up mustard seed and an idiom for the smallest thing possible), that it expanded extremely rapidly and enormously, that it is ancient beyond human reckoning, and that the Earth itself is ancient beyond counting. Yet you act as though you are a better Hebrew scholar than people who devoted their lives to understanding it!

Doubling down on the lie is not a legitimate response.

Again you respond as though the scriptures intend to teach science – yet you have yet to provide an explanation of why that is so!

Yet you are not in the least attentive to the actual Genesis Creation account!

I’ve thought about that from time to time.

I’ve wondered off and on if my postings here are some sort of penance for not being alert to help more YECers in university through the crisis. Almost every post I make I find myself thinking that I could have done more, should have done more.

What do you believe the the Holy Spirit is whispering, @adamjedgar, that people here are refusing?
