If I tell you “Don’t do that or you’ll ronfle!”, that doesn’t make sense. Likewise, the warning “you shall surely die” needs to be comprehensible - Adam and Eve need to have some concept of what “die” means.

One summer camp/week held on a university campus had a nonsense word for a theme one summer, which got used in a variety of contexts that never provided enough information to every figure out what, if anything, it was supposed to mean. It was a great way to show young teenagers that just because you have a word you don’t necessarily have a meaning.
