Pithy quotes from our current reading which give us pause to reflect

When did cascading footnotes stop working???

All sorts of new fangled formatting changes in the last few or more months.

Almost nothing can be done by hand any more it seems.

If I stop believing in God’s justice, I become less forgiving.

I just watched the movie Simon Birch with my wife when I realized it was based on the book @Jay313 recommended to me, A Prayer For Owen Meany. Geez, what a horrible job of it. Apparently John Irving sold the rights to making a movie on the condition the name be changed because he realized it could never transfer to the big screen. If you haven’t yet wasted your time on this horrible movie count yourself lucky.

I will continue to follow this advice, Mark.

“When you’re scalded, touch hurts; it doesn’t matter how kindly it’s meant. Now.”

–quoted by Russell Moore in “Reading In Exile” review of Gilead series “Lila,” by Marilynne Robinson

I really enjoyed Lila. In Gilead, we saw Lila through Rev. Ames eyes, and a bit through the eyes of his church, indirectly, as I recall (it has been awhile since I read it). Then in Lila, we see her as the world saw her. It helped me see how God sees and loves us,
Also that quote reminds me of the book I just finished, Traumatized Church, by McKnight. Good read, and helped me see how trauma affects both myself and others, and how we can respond to trauma in a more loving way, knowing that even then, “touch hurts.”

Quote by Sherry Turkle on Ezra Klein about AI artificial relationships and caring: “It’s so tragic that an object comes along that doesn’t care for you at all, and becomes the receptacle for what other people need so terribly.”

“I think that many people have forgotten that, if knowledge is to have any meaning, if it is to be useful, it should have an impact in the world.” - You Have the Right to Be Brilliant: An Interview with Dr. Angela Davis USCS.

If however, you do not fight this righteous war, then you will fail in your duty, lose your reputation, and incur sin. ( it’s about inaction or empty emotions but never making a choice ) - Bhagavad Gita 2:33 though I’m actually reading it in the commentary on it by Easwaran.

“If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food and one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill,” and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.” - James 2:15-17 NRSVue.

To me it’s similar to how many people replace actual social interactions in the real world with joy gained from getting likes and hearts on social media.

So many people self isolate themselves. They get scared and lazy to go out and just talk to people, get numbers and instead of binging some tv show alone in their house eating fast food they could find 3 others, cook something and all watch an episode or two together each week.

Read once that the bulk of peoples social needs are falsely met with small talk at work.
