The creed recited was the Nicene creed, which unites Catholics, Orthodox, and most Protestants. The purple vestments? Purple is the color of repentance, for Advent is a penitential season, preparing the way of the Lord, as John the Baptist did. Purple vestments are also used for Lent, another penitential season.

Agreed. The temple cult may have had ulterior motives, but the Pharisees thought they were protecting the law of Moses.
