Functionalism and emergence in this context seem like an appeal to magic to me. It’s equivalent to God did it. It is describing a mystery, not explaining it.

Good point – it makes clear something that’s bugged me about the whole “emergence” idea.

However, there is manifold demonstration that the physical state of the brain profoundly affects, correlates with, and limits our mental faculties. I have never found an convincing explanation of why that should be if our mind is somehow apart from our brain.

Because – to use an analogy – a computer program’s capacity cannot exceed that of the machine it runs in.
