That’s a ridiculous statement. Penzias and Wilson wrote a one page paper about nine months of measurements of “noise” and won the Nobel Prize. It is arguably the most important paper in all of human history.

True. And what about that silly little paper by Watson and Crick?

Only the mere technicians, the ones incapable of big-picture thinking, the ones who aren’t imaginative enough scientifically to ever do anything but slave away in a corner accumulating more details to support the current paradigm, read only the latest articles, and pooh-pooh the reading of scientific books as professionally unimportant.

Yes, doing actual research is hard work, but I can’t say I know of anybody who pooh-poohs the reading of scientific books as professionally unimportant.
