If a literal reading of Genesis flood and destruction of Sodom and Gomorah is false, how should we explain direct New Testament references to the Genesis accounts?

We can agree events objectively happen, it’s what ultimately causes the event is where it gets tricky.

Causality is a foundational concept that is implicit in how we explain how stuff behaves, but if we try to examine (or debate) it directly, as a feature of the world rather than a component of our models of the world, we find we don’t know what we’re talking about. Which is why I’m not much inclined to talk about it.

I assume everyone can agree events objectively happen, and from there we can talk about what it means if an event is caused or uncaused.
