Humor in Science and Theology

Point Pelee, Canada’s southern most point, is farther south than the northern tip of California.

You’re right–thanks. I was not correct in the way I said it. Sorry! I think that Windsor is the only Canadian city that you can drive straight south out of a US City. In fact, as you said, more than 50% of Canadians live south of the main US border in Ontario. Wow, I learned a lot today

The fact that I tend to either be just confused about why the argument is supposed to be good/useful, or tend to start feeling like throwing the tome across the room within a few minutes (most were library discards, and I have only read any individual one for about 10 minutes), suggests perhaps otherwise.

As an example, his (Nelson’s) arguments about how similar fossils were to recent organisms, [and how this discredits their claimed age] were either trivial (e.g. Pliocene leaves looking just like modern ones), or laughably wrong, like thylacines being indistinguishable from canids (seriously, if I can tell that the dentitions are noticeably different from a side view of the skull, they aren’t very similar).

In response:

‘‘We must conceive of the library as a channel through which books pass on their way from the publisher to the incinerator,’’ the librarian G. Hardin declared in an edict issued in 1947.

which I take to indicate that a great many things published are simply an enormous waste of paper and ink.

Additionally,

As an example, his (Nelson’s) arguments about how similar fossils were to recent organisms, [and how this discredits their claimed age] were either trivial (e.g. Pliocene leaves looking just like modern ones), or laughably wrong, like thylacines being indistinguishable from canids (seriously, if I can tell that the dentitions are noticeably different from a side view of the skull, they aren’t very similar).

… is a fine example why laypeople and pastors need to have the humility to recognize when we are out of our league and not to settle on the loudest voice, telling us what we think we want to hear.

Outstanding advice.
Actually, my eyes are starting to cross, but that’s a different matter. And my computer screen is doing some very strange things as well.

It is tough to get my brain to fade the colors. Perhaps it works better close to the screen to get the rainbow further out to the peripheral vision. We only see color in our central vision where the cones are concentrated, but our brain fills in the colors on the periphery that we know are there. When a color is unknown, you can’t tell what it is on the faf peripheral vision. Likewise, the rods are more sensitive to light (but not color) on the periphery, which why you can see Pleiades better when it is off to the side instead of when looking directly at it.

The thing is that I’m by no means an expert on plants or vertebrates, but I have enough of a clue about paleo generally to tell that those arguments are bad.

A side note about dentition: that is what produces the humor in a local injury lawyer’s billboard. The text reads “When a Big Dog Bites, Hawk Law Fights”. The problem is that the “big dog” pictured looks like a chihuahua with absurd dentures (12 incisors, 8 canines, and no teeth behind the canines).
