Genesis and the Flood: Understanding Ancient History

It is also avialable here: Geophysical Journal International

Then Kurt Wise must be referring to something else in the video segment I linked. The 2 geologists found 2-week flips in lava, and later repeated their experiment in another flow. I typically have to listen to these lectures a dozen times before I can make sense of them, but he does seem to present a fairly detailed flood model. That means there is a lot to criticize by those who reject a global flood.

You guys! You guys.

These are special antediluvian squids. They’re sort of like the carnivorous dinosaurs that ate vegetables — there were obviously squids that breathed air.

I mean, miracles! Anything is possible. The truthfulness of God’s Word is at stake.

The problem is not the 2 week flip. The problem is the 5,500 years it takes to get to that 2 week flip. A reversal ever 5,500 years + 2 weeks is still too slow for the flood theory to work. Remember Humphreys says the field reversed several times in one year.

Which is why text is better. Without taking detailed notes during a lecture it is hard to reconstruct what was actually said and it is easy to get the wrong impression.

Not unless they are thugs, and then it is not slander. Are you familiar with the Richard Sternberg controversy?

Can you imagine… In the nearly fifty years since the Apollo program made headlines, not one major American history journal has accepted a paper that tells the truth about the faked lunar landings?? Bias!!

[Note: There’s a weird glitch in my Forum interface where once I delete a comment, I can never actually get rid of it. I deleted my comment to LXX here, and then tried to reply to T_aquaticus’s later, but instead, it showed up as an edited version of my old reply to LXX. Weird.]

Post-fall belemnites evidently became carnivorous along with the dinosaurs. So now I’m wondering, how was there enough room for the quadrillion squids and the thousands of quadrillions of little fishies that would have had to grow to adulthood in the ocean to provide food for the hungry belemnites. And all the hundreds of thousands of quadrillions of pounds of plankton that would have been eaten by the the fish so the quadrillion member belemnite population could be sustained. Those belemnites weren’t exactly low on the food chain.

Over 20,000 sq. km? How was is measured?

I didn’t reject your calculations. I reject (well, have reservations about ) the assumptions until I see more data.

And there is no doubt those concentrations are found throughout the entire 20.000 km basin?

This is a waste of time.

Are you?

Myself and every scientist I know has had papers that were initially rejected for publication. This is hardly uncommon.

Has it every crossed your mind that maybe it’s just bad science?

I sent you the paper. Did you not receive it?

I agree. There will never be too much research, or too much data.

That’s odd? This archived article, Condrum at Steen’s Mountain, also says the paper containing the calculations of the first flow was published in 1989.

It appears Wise did get his dates wrong, or his words mixed up; that is, he was referring to the 2nd paper you mentioned, New evidence for extraordinarily rapid change of the geomagnetic field during a reversal, with the belief the first paper was rejected, or the publication was refused by the journal of Coe’s choice. There are statements on the internet the data was “tabled”, or “dimissed”, but with no sources.

Snelling’s commented on the 1989 paper as if it had been rejected (but acknowledge it has been published), in a report on the 2nd paper:

  • “There the story would have ended, except that Coe and Prévot have continued their painstaking work. Now they have reported that the rate at which the orientation of the ancient magnetic field rotated reached an astounding 6° per day over an 8-day period, and have argued that these field changes recorded in these lava flows at Steens Mountain do reflect changes in the Earth’s main magnetic field.” [Andrew A Snelling, “The Principle of Least Astonishment.” Answers in Genesis, 1995]

I typically do (I don’t always understand them, but I do check references). I saw that video for the first time the day I mentioned it on this thread. I am still digesting it.

LOL! I hope! 70 and counting . . .

Thanks. I missed it the first time. The light blue links are a little difficult for me to see.

Just one comment about these magnetic reversals.

If you’re going to claim that a young earth is scientifically consistent with the evidence, it’s not sufficient to demonstrate that some things could have happened quickly. You need to demonstrate that everything could have happened quickly.

Not only that, but you also need to demonstrate that the rates at which everything happened could have been accelerated in complete lock-step with each other so as to keep all the evidence in sync.

So accelerated nuclear decay, catastrophic plate tectonics, deposition of lake varves and ice core layers, and even a whole myriad of astronomical effects, would all have to have been accelerated by a varying factor of up to a million or more by exactly the same factor at exactly the same time at all times.

I am yet to see YECs propose any mechanism that could have achieved that.

There is one unconventional interpretation, Christy. The scripture states that all flesh was corrupted:

  • “But the earth was corrupted before God, and the earth was filled with iniquity. And the Lord God saw the earth, and it was corrupted; because all flesh had corrupted its way upon the earth. And the Lord God said to Noe, A period of all men is come before me; because the earth has been filled with iniquity by them, and, behold, I destroy them and the earth.” – Gen 6:12-14 LXX

Extrabiblical Hebrew documents take it a step further, implying hybridization as one of the causes of the corruption of flesh:

  • “and the sons of men in those days took from the cattle of the earth, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the air, and taught the mixture of animals of one species with the other?, in order therewith to provoke the Lord; and God saw the whole earth and it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted its ways upon earth, all men and all animals.” — Jasher 4:18

Perhaps God does not appreciate us tinkering with his DNA.

It gets even stranger when discussing the disposition of the fallen angels. These angels:

  • “For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;” – 2 Peter 2:4-5 KJV

Supposedly, they are the ones who corrupted the earth – the flesh. In any case, the order of flesh was corrupted, and, thus, there could have been overpopulations of some species or hybrids.

Sometimes it is difficult to figure out who to believe:

“Expelled Exposed” Exposed

From that page:

  • “Most of the falsehoods in circulation about the film can be traced to a website called “Expelled Exposed” set up by the pro-Darwin National Center for Science Education (NCSE) as part of its PR effort to smear the documentary last year.”

I will study both.

LXX

Of course. There is a lot of bad science.

LXX

Not really. It is a matter of fact that Sternberg put in his resignation as editor prior to the article being published. Sternberg also admits that he didn’t consult any of the other editors. You don’t need much imagination to come to the conclusion that Sternberg knew the article wouldn’t pass normal peer review, so he forced it through on his way out the door. He knew that he was abusing his editorship.

There is absolutely no evidence that Sternberg had his life ruined. He kept his same unpaid position at the Smithsonian. He claims his keys were taken from him, but the truth is that EVERYONE’S keys were taken since they switched to a badge system.

What you are seeing is an attempt to play the persecuted so they don’t have to address the evidence. It’s one of the oldest tactics in the book.

Then don’t you think it makes sense to look at the papers young Earth creationists claim are being rejected by journals and then see if the criticisms made by the reviewers are legitimate?

Of course, this would actually require you to point to a young Earth creationist paper that was submitted to a peer review journal. In my experience, young Earth creationists just like to claim that their papers would be rejected, but never actually submit any papers because they know it is bad science. They are trying to act like they are Rosa Parks without ever getting on the bus.

It doesn’t state all flesh was corrupted (passive voice). It says all flesh had corrupted its way (implies agency). There is a reason most modern translations choose “all people” instead of “all flesh.” People choose to sin. It isn’t something that happens to you. If everything sins, you are granting agency to all creatures. Do you believe animals sin? Do animals fill the earth with iniquity? (Another name for immoral behavior.) If animals are capable of sin, why are only humans uniquely accountable to God for sin?

Animal husbandry is not “tinkering with DNA.” In Scripture, Jacob is specifically blessed by God through his animal husbandry efforts.

Not what the Bible says in almost every single place it talks about judgment for sin, and that is a lot of places. Generally, it’s a good principle to base your theology on the preponderance of clear passages instead of using one or two obscure and difficult passages as a lens through which you interpret everything else. People are selfish and prideful and descend into wickedness because of their own willful disobedience.

And none of this addresses the issue that there could not have possibly been enough food/water in the ocean to support all the fossilized life forms we find on earth if they are all the result of a single catastrophic event. Geology and Young Earth Creationism: Too Many Fossils for a Global Flood
