Evolution as Anamnesis: When Biology Remembers Itself

Again, it depends on the domain. Since this thread concerns evolution and ecology, g(P, A, c, τ) represents the system’s evolutionary or ecological gradient: the directional pull toward coherence or maturity within that field.

In ecology:
g_eco = ∇(M_succession)
Units: (Δbiomass or Δbiodiversity) / Δtime — for example, kg·m^-2*yr^-1 or species·ha^-1*yr^-1
This describes the gradient between a primary succession forest (low M_active, high M_latent) and its draw toward an old-growth state where that difference approaches zero.

In evolution:
g_evo = ∇(M_form)
Units: (Δmorphological coherence or Δfunctional complexity) / Δgenerations; for example, trait variance*gen^-1 or morphospace*gen^-1
This captures the developmental pull of a lineage toward its stable or “climax” morphology, like blue whales or horseshoe crabs or Doug-firs, species in which evolutionary change slows as coherence/beauty/geometry/morphology peaks.

So, g is not arbitrary. It’s the measurable slope of “memory crystallization” across domains, expressed in the natural units of each system’s change over time. Best understood from atmospheric science: the flow between high pressure and low pressure.

And of course, this is where Teilhard de Chardin would cue the drum roll**,** especially for those of us who are Christians, because this very gradient points toward his “Phenomenon of Man”!

He is Peter’s living hope from 1 Peter 1:3, which is just as inevitable as the gravity which pulls me to earth. :wink: Mr. T, see why “I love it when a plan comes together.”

Mr Zelenka, how would you make a proof for memory?

Is there a parallel to ether? As you know, that was ruled out; but if you applied similar criteria, would it help to clarify “memory,” or quintessence?

Would you please compare or contrast the difference for me, to understand better?

Thank you.

Aether (classical element) - Wikipedia

I find that medicine has similar conundrums. Some decry the breaking down of individuals to systems, and feel there’s a quintessence and oneness in humans that doctors miss. I can see the hope, but it doesn’t seem to work out as holistic reasoning.

We can equally hope for healing, by understanding the wonder of reality.

Thank you.
