Does intelligence make us special?

True, perhaps I should rephrase to say that intelligence is an important thing for an image-bearer to have even though a diminished intelligence does not disqualify you as an image bearer. Otherwise, we would basically be in the same place as Peter Singer who has argued that severely mentally disabled people are of less intrinsic worth than an able-bodied chimpanzee.

Dr. Michael Heiser does as well; in his talks about abortion he points out that if the image of God consists of any human traits, those lacking them wouldn’t qualify . . . and an unborn feotus lacks a lot of traits! so to defend a full-on pro-life position one is better off going with “made as the image of God” which makes it a status bestowed by God, not anything intrinsic to us (or as John Walton puts it, a “function” assigned by God, which Adam and Eve were competent to carry out, thus qualifying to be called "good).
