This is not what I mean. Belief in long life spans before the flood (some utopian primordial past) was the norm at the time the text was written/edited/codified and that is its appropriate historical context. It was the conventional knowledge at the time and Genesis 6:3 even explains why the change occurred. They were recorder for a variety of reasons, a small one being ancient peoples though their distant ancestors lived much longer lives than they did. To claim these numbers were intended only to be pure symbolism/rhetorical numerology is inerrancy harmonization plain and simple. And that is Walton’s argument and what I have pushed back against since the beginning.

“conventional knowledge” doesn’t mean the ages are correct.

Given the “conventional knowledge” wouldn’t the record have to reflect longer lives? Thus making it a big reason and not a small one.

And given the “conventional knowledge” I would suggest numerology explains why the ages were changed in the various manuscripts. The symbolism is probably a modern injection into the text.
