Yes i think thats what it is. One could be forgiven for thinking that this is straight out of the movie Avatar
Cool lizards and punk caterpillars!
How are you doing, @SkovandOfMitaze? How’s healing, etc?
Feel free to PM, if that’s better for you.
It’s going. It still hurts obviously. My hand currently looks like this. I’m going to see if I can have the rest of my pointer finger removed, even if I have to pay for it myself if my index finger will regain enough movement to close into a fist because the nub has no tendons and can’t go into a fist. That nub is good for nothing. They say a prosthetic can attach to it more easily but I don’t care about a $7,000 functionless silicone finger. I care about being able to defend myself by baking a fist which I can’t do with that tendonless useless nub poking out. If the middle finger don’t regain enough mobility to squeeze into a fist I’ll probably see if they can both be removed. Guess ultimately just have to wait a few months to see what comes back.
I am already back to working. Doctor gave me a release with full right hand restriction and must not get to sweaty to decrease infection and want my hand to stay dry.
Talking with lawyers for a few different reasons. A trainer I had for small arms in the military is going to cone down in a few weeks to help me go some training with my left hand shooting. Since boxing is a bit weakened for me at the moment I’m talking with a Brazilian jujitsu trainer to hammer down more arm and leg locks. Been looking at wrist straps and hooks to assist with weight training. The physical therapist told me to hold off on any training though for a few weeks.
Feel a bit more angry now than a week or so ago. Guess for me what I’m hoping for is some kind of legitimate compensation and for almost full mobility in thumb and middle finger and removing the nub.
But I’m mostly good. Worst part of my day is removing the bandages and washing it by allowing soapy water to run down it. Then drying it off and placing new bandages on it. Perhaps in a few weeks it will get better.
Yeah. There’s a lot to consider, and it’s hard to plan for the unknown.
If you haven’t already, you might want to talk to folks who actually make various types of prostheses. Just to make sure you have all the information you need to make the decision that best suits your personal needs and goals. You may end up having to weigh day-to-day functionality against self-defense.
I can understand being angry about this. Because of an inattentive coworker in an unsafe work place, your life has been changed significantly and irreversibly. I think talking to the lawyer is important. In addition to helping with the enormous costs you suddenly find yourself stuck with, maybe the shop will be forced to implement some real safety measures to protect workers in the future.
Changing bandages and wound care are notoriously challenging jobs - even with help. As your wounds heal, it will be less bad. But you are also learning at the same time to do so many things with your non-dominant hand.
I will keep praying for your recovery and therapy, etc.
I know there are full-hand functional prostheses; I suppose there aren’t any for single fingers.
Definitely. I once made a big medical decision without knowing all the options, and as a result my decision was sub-optimal. Maybe some company makes a prosthetic that will work with a thumb and two fingers.
Absolutely! A friend of mine got his back screwed up also because of an inattentive co-worker, and though the doctors say he deserves a compensation payment on the order of $250k (on top of all medical expenses), the doctors aren’t going to go in and testify unless a lawyer compels them – something I don’t understand at all, but that’s the way things work sometimes.
When I almost cut a thumb off the wound care etc. was worse for me than the pain! I got frustrated enough more than once after having to start over with the bandage that I punched the wall with my good hand. I can’t imagine having to deal with two fingers as well; I don’t think I have that patience. Hang in there!
“Let all the people say ‘Amen!’”
Praying for your recovery as well. I think this statement is important:
It is too early to know what is best as far as rehab. Sometimes a nub is useful for a pincher type function with the thumb, and you don’t want to lose that, even with no prosthesis. A good occupational therapist might be helpful once the healing process allows more use.
I am way behind on photos.
This is an ID i have been working on with @klax for about a year. It is Viburnum Opulus, the European one, not American Highbush Cranberry.
This caught my eye, when I was wandering around the yard yesterday:
It’s part of an oak leaf that is ballooned out. I’m guessing a bug nursery of some kind. You can see in the third photo that part of the leaf is not included in this structure.
I will have to keep an eye on this as well as look for information. I didn’t see any similar structure elsewhere on the tree or its neighbors.
Edit: Wikipedia says: Oak apple - Wikipedia
I HAVE seen these after they’re dried up. Just never “fresh”.
Cool.
What about it makes the gills “false.”
It’s convergent or just very similar superficially. It’s made from tubes. They are very spongy and stain when bruised.
