Both are needed, reduction of CO2 emissions and scrubbers like trees.

By planting a half trillion trees, it would be possible to reduce atmospheric carbon by about 25% (200 gigatons). This would be a valuable addition to the fight against climate change.
There are enough of land that could be transformed to forest (global estimate 900 million hectares) for the half trillion trees.

We need re-afforestation for much more than a marginal carbon sink. Flood and drought prevention, biodiversity, building material. Nuclear power is much quicker to roll out.

True. Now it seems possible that small mammals are replacing large mammals.

Global mass extinction opens space for new creatures. Yet, it might take some time before we have new species replacing the old ones. Millions of years.
