Aye, British capitalists even stopped the Atlantic slave trade. The ongoing catastrophe of the American Civil War (we still haven’t recovered from ours after nearly four centuries) was a political response to secession, not slavery (slavers’ rights being the cause of secession, and even then not; Lincoln’s Republicans opposed the right to slave in new territories, not the South): it’s ALL economics, first, second and third.
Capitalism can act with enlightened self interest (we can actually make more profit beyond laissez faire, pain tho’ it is to actually fait something, change, even for more money). The temperance movement was about worker productivity. Children dying up chimneys or asthma in your constituency is bad for business via your seat in parliament.
What is the politically possible, enlightened self interest, in trashing your economy by oppressing your own workers for the unquantifiable sake of remote brown people? They don’t have a vote.
Green economics that makes your poor pay is political suicidal insanity.
Couldn’t agree more on fission. Well until you said this was a trillion barrel reserve in the US. We need it in the UK for energy security.
I was at an abstruse (we all felt it!) zoom lecture last night, ‘Blackham Lecture Watch Party, Neuromyths: classrooms, culture, and climate change’ where I gobsmacked my new humanist friends by saying that teenage girl hysteria of imminent doom, is no more real, i.e. going to affect them externally, proximately, than the nuclear hysteria from my pre-adolescence that directed me to an apocalyptic cult for 30 years. Less so. The nuclear threat is still indelibly real. But utterly irrelevant. Therefore we should be educating the masses in the pursuit of happiness closer to home.
And your link is 15 years old soon!
Why haven’t I known about this? It hasn’t been news. For nearly 15 years. Peak oil obviously disappeared from the news from then. Fascinating. Why haven’t the conservative US media and GB News trumpeted it? So as not to provoke even more climate doom hysteria?
That shot my fox: that’s why capitalism won’t invest in sustainability Bill (@wbwane)! And you didn’t know, in your professional 60s. They don’t have to for half a millennium!
The arc of the moral universe follows capitalism. In fact. It leads it. From 99% hunter gatherer evolution.
…
What astounds me is that 5 (GPT) doesn’t know about this. It says peak in in 25. I’m sure I’ve seen 5: 2030. So, what does it say about the reserves? We shall see.
…
Wow. 5 only took geology in to account. Not economics & tech. Capitalism will be bullish about this, regardless of the cost to brown people.
The liberal, left, green agenda has absolutely no chance, apart from in Europe and China. Who have no oil.
