I can definitely see that there’s a reason for having the say, if you donate a lot of money–for example, it’s crazy how much it costs to send someone from the US nowadays, what with insurance, etc (I think $100K for 4 people!). I also think that there is a role for oversight, and the church sometimes needs to add on to the mission board to make sure the missionary isn’t just a maverick, out for some fun (remember the clip of the Millennial Missionaries, who were called to go scuba diving in the Caribbean?). It’s a bit of a conundrum–there is no easy answer. It’s great that your missionaries have someone like you, seeing both sides of the coin.
