Good topics for discussion. In fact, such a broad range of issues that if discussion warrants we may well want to break it up into separate threads. As a physician for 37 years, I have come into contact with pretty much all these situations, and find that one of the main problems I run into is in the end of life setting, though there are ethical issues even in everyday practice we deal with regarding treatment and testing. While we as a society have backed away from the paternalism or maternalism of the past, the issue is often with the complexity of treatment and care, the patient is now making decisions with little understanding of what they are doing.
