Well, perhaps it’s an odd reversal that I link a wikipedia article back at you, George. But I’ll have to confess I knew nothing of him either before having read the Atlantic article. I must say, the wikipedia entry (at least in its opening) is not being any kinder or gentler on him than Gersom was. But true to history, and my original point about its messiness, even Mencken’s villainy may have had its chinks. He seems to have been quite a mess of [mostly!] despicable political views, and given his admiration for Nietzsche … well, need any more be said?
I have read the article as well. I think I understand why evangelicals flocked to Trump initially. He did offer them some changes that they were looking for, what is a complete mystery is why they are continuing to act as sword and shield to a man who is so immoral by their own standards. Is it because our evangelical leaders cannot themselves admit that they might have been wrong to endorse him in the first place? Its a mystery to me. It certainly does make us/them look like hypocrites.
Its not the first time that evangelicals have led its followers in the wrong direction. The article also mentions the line drawn in the sand concerning the contest between science and evolution and how it is a dual to the death. By sticking to a literal interpretation of Genesis many would say that evangelicals do indeed live with an alternate view of reality. It was wrong for our evangelical leaders to say that creation and evolution cannot coexist, because they simply do co-exist. There is no science out there that can rule out the creative act of a God who willed the world that we know into existence. Proof of evolution does not disprove creation. What science has proven is that things have evolved since they were created.
I don’t know if anyone has read the book by John Lennox called “Gods Undertaker, Has Science Buried God?” If not I highly recommend it.

I agree it does deem very strange that they would choose an ideology over the Gospel.
One important thing which the article does not mention in this discussion, and that is the problem of Absolute Truth. Evangelicals decided to anchor their faith in the Word of God, as the Bible and not Jesus Christ. This was in large part because “higher criticism” of the Bible in the name of science.
They saw evolution as survival of the fittest as opening the way to relativism, and indeed evolution was used to justify attacks on Biblical morality as Bryan feared. Natural selection as survival of the fittest is anti-Christian since it contradicts John 1:1-3.
The problem is that they cure, the making the Bible an Idol was worse that the disease, liberal relativism. However the problem is still a problem and needs to be properly addressed so it can be resolved. The problem being that the Truth, Jesus Christ, is not Absolute nor is the Truth Relative. The Truth, Jesus Christ is Relational.
